I replaced an old 5ton equipment. When I removed the old fau , I noticed that the return air was undersized. It has a 28x7 opening only. Me, explaining to H.O. the problem, I suggested to add a side opening to unit and making the RA bigger to accommodate airflow. Only problem, it will be a bit louder. There's no way to get more air from anywhere else, since unit is in garage. Behind unit, there's a powder bath, on the right side, laundry. Only way was on left side, but return grille is right next to unit. I explained to H.O. the situation before proceeding. After everything, yes unit is more noisy, but airflow improve. H.O is mad and told me im a bad installer and should have gone with a different company. I told her that I can closed up the additional opening that I did, but it may have airflow issues. Any suggestions on how to make it quieter and efficient? Thanks.
