Interesting one here... This AO Smith dom. water heater had intermittent flame failures. I found the ground connection loose. When I pulled the sparker, the ground rod was loose and broke off, the ground terminal was also discoloured. Proper grounding is important on burners with spark ignition and flame rectification. I would make a solid bet that this was the root cause of the intermittent issues.
